What Does an ATC Officer Do?

An Air Traffic Controller (ATC) communicates with pilots via radio to provide instructions on routing, altitude, speed, and spacing between aircraft. They use radar systems, computers, and communication equipment to monitor multiple aircraft simultaneously within their assigned airspace. A single ATC officer may manage 10–20 aircraft at any given moment, making the role both challenging and immensely responsible. ATC officers work in Control Towers at airports, Approach Control facilities, and Area Control Centers (ACC) across India.

Eligibility

Educational Qualification: BE/BTech in Electronics, Telecommunications, Electrical, Computer Science, or Physics/Maths at graduation level. For direct DGCA recruitment, a B.Sc. with Physics and Maths is also accepted for some roles.

Age: 21 to 32 years. Maximum age is relaxed to 34 years for OBC and 37 years for SC/ST candidates.

Medical Standards: Must meet DGCA Class 3 Medical requirements which includes strict vision standards (unaided or corrected to 6/6), normal hearing, no cardiovascular issues, and overall excellent physical health. Color blindness is a disqualifying condition for this role.

Language: Proficiency in English (ICAO Level 4 or higher) is mandatory. ICAO is the International Civil Aviation Organization, and all ATC communication worldwide is in English.

Recruitment Process

Step 1 – Online Exam (Technical + Aptitude): Covers electronics fundamentals, air navigation basics, aviation regulations, and general aptitude.

Step 2 – Voice and Diction Test: Assesses clarity and confidence of speech - a crystal-clear, accent-neutral voice is essential for safe ATC communication.

Step 3 – DGCA Medical Examination: The most rigorous physical test in Indian aviation recruitment. Conducted at designated DGCA medical centers.

Step 4 – Document Verification: After clearing all above stages, offer letters are issued and candidates proceed to training.

Training Life

ATC training is intensive and rigorous, lasting 12–18 months. Trainees learn radar operations, phraseology, emergency procedures, weather interpretation, and flight rules under the supervision of senior certified controllers at AAI's ATC Training Centre in Allahabad or Hyderabad. The training ends with a skill test and DGCA licensing. Once licensed, ATC officers are bound to serve at AAI-assigned locations, which could be anywhere from a small city airport to major international hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, or Chennai.

Junior ATC Officers start at a basic pay of ,40,000 (E-1 grade). After training and field deployment, with experience, pay reaches ,1,00,000+ per month for Senior ATC officers. The total CTC including perks can exceed ,20 lakhs per annum for experienced officers.
