What is a Probationary Officer?
A Probationary Officer (PO) at a public sector bank is an officer-grade employee who goes through a 2-year probation period before becoming a confirmed officer. During probation, they are trained in all banking operations - branch banking, credit appraisal, foreign exchange, treasury, advances, and retail banking. After confirmation, they are posted as an Assistant Manager (Scale I) and gradually move up through promotions. It is one of the most respected and well-compensated government jobs in India.

Eligibility

Exam Pattern & Stages
Preliminary Exam (100 marks, 60 mins): English Language (30 Qs), Quantitative Aptitude (35 Qs), Reasoning Ability (35 Qs).
Main Exam (225 marks, 3.5 hrs): Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, General Economy/Banking Awareness, English Language, Data Analysis & Interpretation, and an English Descriptive Paper (Letter Writing + Essay, 30 mins).
Interview (100 marks): Conducted by panels from participating banks. Final merit = 80% Mains + 20% Interview.
