Core Responsibilities

A Station Master's daily duties include: exchanging Line Clear tokens with neighboring stations before authorizing train movements (using Absolute Block Working), maintaining the Train Register (TR), monitoring platform occupancy and crowd management, issuing caution orders to loco pilots for track issues, managing goods loading and unloading operations at freight-handling stations, supervising booking office and reservation operations, handling passenger grievances and emergencies (medical, fire, security), coordinating with RPF and GRPF for security, and maintaining station accounts and returns. At larger stations, the Station Master has a team of Assistant Station Masters (ASMs) and Point Man under their supervision.

Eligibility and Requirements

Educational Qualification: Any Graduation degree in any discipline from a recognized university, with knowledge of computers. Preference for candidates with 12th Science background (Physics) as understanding of railway signaling concepts is required. A Computer Certificate from a recognized institution is also mandatory.

Age Limit: 18 to 36 years. Maximum age relaxed to 39 for OBC and 41 for SC/ST candidates.

Vision Standard: Station Masters must have Distant Vision of 6/9 and 6/9 (with or without glasses) and Near Vision of Sn 0.6 in each eye. Color Vision and Night Vision are also tested as Station Masters must distinguish signal colors (green, red, yellow) in all lighting conditions. Defective color perception is a disqualifying condition.

Salary & Benefits

Station Masters are placed in Level 6 of the 7th CPC (Basic Pay ,35,400). With all allowances, the gross monthly salary is approximately ,45,000 to ,55,000. At busy A1-category stations (major junctions), additional Special Duty Allowances apply. Station Masters are also entitled to Station House Accommodation (official residence provided by Railways at or near the station), which is a significant benefit - especially at remote stations where private accommodation is unavailable. Exam Pattern: Including the CBAT

CBT 1 (100 questions, 90 mins): General Awareness, Mathematics, Reasoning - screening test.

CBT 2 (120 questions, 90 mins): Same sections at a higher difficulty level - merit-determining.

Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT): This is unique to the Station Master post. The CBAT tests specific aptitude parameters required for safe train operations: Memory (short-term and pattern memory), Following Directions (ability to process and act on rapid sequential instructions), Concentration (ability to maintain focus under distraction), and Perceptual Speed (speed of information processing). Only those who clear CBT 2 are called for CBAT, and only CBAT-qualified candidates proceed to Document Verification. Candidates must score minimum qualifying marks in CBAT (40% for UR/OBC, 35% for SC/ST). Final merit is based on CBT 2 scores, with CBAT being purely qualifying.

Training

Selected Station Masters undergo a comprehensive training program at the Railway Staff College, Vadodara (India's premier railway training institution) or at a designated divisional training center. Training covers train operations theory (Absolute Block Working, Station Working Rules, Train Control), emergency protocols, computerized reservation and freight systems, signaling and interlocking principles, and station administration. After training, candidates are posted as Assistant Station Masters (ASMs) and progressively given independent charge of smaller stations before being posted as Station Masters at busier stations.
