2. AEE (Electronics & Communication / Instrumentation):

Requires a Post-Graduate Degree (M.Sc / M.Tech) in Geology, Geophysics, or Chemistry with a minimum of 60% marks.

4. Programming Officer / IT:
Requires a degree in Computer Science, IT, or MCA with 60% marks.

Age Limit: For most AEE and Geo-Science posts, the maximum age limit is 30 years for the General/EWS category. For AEE (Drilling) and AEE (Cementing), which involve rigorous physical fieldwork, the age limit is restricted to 28 years. Standard relaxations of 3 years for OBC and 5 years for SC/ST apply.

The Golden Paycheck: Salary and Allowances

ONGC's compensation structure is legendary. Graduate Trainees are inducted at the E-1 level. The pay scale is ,60,000 – ,1,80,000 with an annual increment of 3%.

Gross Monthly Salary: The Basic Pay is ,60,000. Add to this the Dearness Allowance (IDA), which fluctuates but is currently high, and House Rent Allowance (HRA) ranging from 9% to 27% depending on the posting location. The 14-Day On/14-Day Off Shift & Offshore Allowances:
Engineers posted on offshore rigs (like Bombay High) work a unique 14-days-on and 14-days-off roster. During the 14 days on the rig, they work 12-hour shifts. Because of the isolation and risks involved, they receive a massive Hard Duty Allowance and Offshore Allowance, which can add ,30,000 to ,50,000 extra to their monthly salary. After 14 days, they are flown back to the mainland via helicopter and enjoy 14 days of complete paid leave.

The Selection Process: The Power of GATE

ONGC does not conduct its own written examination for Graduate Trainees. The entire shortlisting process is outsourced to the IITs via the GATE exam.

1. GATE Score Weightage (60%):
You must appear for the GATE exam in your specific discipline. ONGC uses the normalized GATE marks (out of 100) to shortlist candidates in a 1:5 ratio against the available vacancies. Because of the high salary, the cutoffs are extremely high. General category candidates usually need a GATE rank under 300 (and under 100 for core branches like Mechanical) to receive an interview call.

20 marks are awarded for meeting the essential qualification (e.g., 60% in B.Tech), and an additional 5 marks are awarded to candidates holding a Ph.D. in the relevant field.

3. Personal Interview (15%):
The interview is conducted by a panel of ONGC Executive Directors and subject matter experts.
