Role of a Railway Gate Guard

A Railway Gate Guard (Level Crossing Gate Keeper) is responsible for operating the gates at unmanned and manned level crossings. Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification: The candidate must have passed 10th Standard (Matriculation/SSLC) from a recognized board. No higher qualification is required, making this one of the most accessible railway jobs available for candidates who could not continue with higher studies.

Age Limit: Minimum 18 years to maximum 36 years as on the closing date of application. Age relaxation for SC/ST (5 years), OBC-NCL (3 years), and Ex-Servicemen as per government norms.

Selection Process

The selection is conducted entirely through an online Computer Based Test (CBT). The test consists of 100 questions to be attempted in 90 minutes. The syllabus includes: General Awareness (40 questions), Mathematics (30 questions), and General Intelligence & Reasoning (30 questions). The questions are of Class 10 standard. After the CBT, shortlisted candidates are called for Document Verification followed by a Medical Examination. There is NO interview round for this post.

Preparation Tips

Since the exam is based on Class 10 level, focus on NCERT textbooks for Maths and General Science. For General Awareness, study current affairs related to Indian Railways, major government schemes (PM Gati Shakti, Vande Bharat Mission), science and technology, and history/geography basics. Solve at least 20–30 practice questions per day for Mathematics to build speed and accuracy. Familiarize yourself with railway terminology like block section, absolute block working, and tokenless block working.
