It is intellectually stimulating, high-impact, and constantly evolving work at the core of India's economy.

Vacancies & Eligibility

Total Vacancies: 291 (General: 194, DEPR: 35, DSIM: 22, and other specialist posts).

Educational Qualification: Minimum 60% aggregate marks in graduation. For DEPR: Post-graduation in Economics/Econometrics/Mathematical Economics with 55%+. For DSIM: Post-graduation in Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/Applied Statistics.

Salary – India's Best Banking Pay

RBI Grade B officers start at a basic pay of ,55,200 per month in the pay scale of ,55,200 – 2850/9 – 80850. Adding all allowances including DA, HRA (up to 15% for metro posting), Grade Allowance, Family Allowance, CCA, and Special Pay, the total gross monthly salary exceeds ,1,00,000 in cities like Mumbai (RBI HQ). Annual CTC is approximately ,15–18 lakhs. Benefits include RBI quarters or HRA, staff car for senior officers, medical benefits for family, heavily subsidized loans, and an excellent NPS-linked pension scheme.

The Three-Phase Exam

Phase I (Online Objective): General Awareness, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning (200 marks total, 2 hours). Only top candidates (cutoff ~40–50%) clear this. Negative marking applies.

Phase II (Online Descriptive + Objective): Economic & Social Issues (ESI), Finance & Management (FM), and English Writing Skills. This phase is extremely knowledge-intensive and requires in-depth understanding of macroeconomics, RBI functions, financial markets, and management concepts. This is where most candidates are eliminated.

Phase III (Interview): A final personality and knowledge interview conducted at RBI's regional offices by senior RBI officials and external academic experts. You need to be confident, articulate, and deeply knowledgeable about India's economy and financial system.

How to Prepare

RBI Grade B preparation requires 6–12 months of dedicated study. Read NCERT Economics (Classes 11 and 12) as the foundation. Study the RBI Annual Report, Monetary Policy Reports, and Financial Stability Reports (all freely available on rbi.org.in). For Finance & Management, use standard textbooks (Madura for FM, Koontz for Management). Follow The Economic Times and Mint daily. For Phase I, standard bank PO material is sufficient. The ESI & FM papers for Phase II are where maximum time should be invested. Join an RBI-specific online course if possible.
