What is an Assistant Loco Pilot?

An Assistant Loco Pilot is a crucial member of the Indian Railways operations team. Their primary responsibility is to assist the Senior Loco Pilot (train driver) in operating locomotives safely across the extensive railway network of India. Vacancy Details 2026

This year, the total number of vacancies is expected to cross 18,000+ posts across all RRB zones including RRB Mumbai, RRB Delhi, RRB Chennai, RRB Kolkata, RRB Ahmedabad, and many more. Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed 10th Standard (Matriculation / SSLC) from a recognized board AND must hold an ITI certificate in a relevant trade from an institution recognized by NCVT/SCVT. Alternatively, a candidate with an Act Apprenticeship certificate is also eligible. Relevant trades include Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Wireman, Fitter, Welder, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), and others as specified in the notification.

Age Limit: The minimum age is 18 years and the maximum age is 30 years as on the closing date of application. Age relaxation is applicable: 5 years for SC/ST candidates, 3 years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), and 10 years for PwD candidates as per Government of India rules.

Salary & Pay Scale

The post of ALP falls under Level 2 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix. The initial basic pay is ,19,900 per month. After including all allowances such as DA (Dearness Allowance), HRA (House Rent Allowance), Transport Allowance, and other perks, the total in-hand salary can range from ,35,000 to ,42,000 per month. Selection Process

Stage 1 – CBT: A 60-minute objective test with 75 questions covering Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Science, and General Awareness on Current Affairs. Each correct answer carries 1 mark, and there is 1/3rd negative marking for wrong answers.

Stage 2 – CBT: Divided into two parts. Part A is a 90-minute test with 100 questions on Mathematics, Reasoning, Basic Science & Engineering, and General Awareness. Part B is a qualifying test of 75 questions on the relevant trade/ITI subject. Candidates must score at least 35% in Part B to be considered for further rounds.

Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT): Checks aptitude required for loco pilot duties such as memory, following directions, and concentration. Only candidates who passed all CBT stages are called for this.

Document Verification & Medical Examination: Final selected candidates must clear document verification and a strict medical examination as per the Railway Board's prescribed medical standards for A2 vision category.

Exam Preparation Tips

Focus heavily on Class 10 Mathematics and Science. For General Awareness, follow daily newspapers and Railway-specific current affairs. For the ITI trade test, revisit your trade theory and practical concepts thoroughly. Regular mock tests and previous year papers are your best tools. Websites like RRB official portals and coaching apps provide mock CBTs for free. Aim to solve at least 50 practice questions every day in the two months before your exam.

How to Apply

Applications are accepted online only through the official RRB regional websites. Keep the following ready: scanned passport photo, signature, proof of DOB (10th marksheet), ITI/NCVT certificate, caste certificate (if applicable), and a valid mobile number and email ID.
