The Drivers of India's Lifeline
The Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) is one of the most critical and challenging jobs in the Indian Railways. Operated by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs), this recruitment drive attracts millions of applicants from technical backgrounds. The ALP is responsible for assisting the Loco Pilot in driving the train, monitoring the technical status of the locomotive, and ensuring absolute passenger safety.
Working as an ALP is not a 9-to-5 desk job. It involves irregular shifts, night duties, and spending days away from the home station. However, the thrill of controlling a 12,000-horsepower electric locomotive or eventually driving the prestigious Vande Bharat Express makes it a dream job for many.
Eligibility: Strictly Technical
Educational Qualification: Candidates must have Matriculation (Class 10) PLUS an ITI certificate in specific trades (like Fitter, Electrician, Instrument Mechanic, etc.). Alternatively, a Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Automobile Engineering is accepted. Engineering graduates (B.E./B.Tech) in the aforementioned branches are also eligible to apply.
Medical Standard (A-1): This is the most ruthless filtering stage. An ALP must meet the absolute highest medical standard in the railways: 'A-1'. Your distant vision must be 6/6 without glasses. Color blindness, night blindness, or any form of squint will result in immediate disqualification. Even a minor LASIK surgery is permanently disqualifying.
Salary: The Magic of Running Allowance
While the basic pay of an ALP seems low, the gross salary is massive due to the 'Running Allowance'.
Pay Scale: The initial basic pay is ,19,900 (Level 2). However, ALPs are paid a 'Kilometerage Allowance' (approx. ,3.90 per km) for the distance they drive. Since a goods train or express train covers hundreds of kilometers in a single shift, this allowance quickly adds up.
Gross Monthly Salary: Including DA, HRA, Transport Allowance, Night Duty Allowance, and the massive Running Allowance, a fresh ALP easily takes home between ,45,000 to ,55,000 per month. Over the years, as you are promoted to Loco Pilot (Mail/Express), the salary can cross ,1.2 Lakhs per month.
The Selection Process: CBT and Psycho Test
CBT 1 (Screening): A 60-minute objective test covering Math, Reasoning, General Science, and Current Affairs.
CBT 2 (Merit & Trade Test): Consists of Part A (Math, Reasoning, Basic Science & Engineering) and Part B (Relevant Trade Test). Part B is only qualifying, but Part A decides your merit.
CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test): Known as the 'Psycho Test', this evaluates your reaction time, concentration, and perceptual speed. You must score a minimum T-Score of 42 in each of the 5 test batteries to pass.
