What are NTPC Posts?

NTPC stands for Non-Technical Popular Categories. These are administrative and operational roles within Indian Railways that do not require a technical/ITI background. Graduate Level Posts: Station Master (1,736), Goods Guard (3,144), Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk (1,737), Senior Clerk cum Typist (994), and Junior Account Assistant cum Typist (1,507 vacancies).

Undergraduate Level Posts: Junior Clerk cum Typist (1,202), Accounts Clerk cum Typist (361), Junior Time Keeper (17), Trains Clerk (526), and Commercial cum Ticket Clerk (2,022 vacancies). Total vacancies across both groups: 11,558.

Eligibility Criteria

For Undergraduate Posts: Candidates must have passed 12th Standard or its equivalent from a recognized board. For Computer Typist posts, a typing speed of 30 WPM in English or 25 WPM in Hindi on a computer is also required.

For Graduate Posts: Candidates must hold a Bachelor's Degree from any recognized university. Station Masters additionally require knowledge of a computer and completion of Class 12 with Science subjects is preferred.

Age Limit: 18–30 years for most posts (Station Master: 18–36 years). Standard SC/ST/OBC relaxation applies.

Salary Details

Undergraduate posts fall under Level 2 (,19,900) and Level 3 (,21,700) pay matrices. Graduate posts fall under Level 5 (,29,200) and Level 6 (,35,400). When combined with Dearness Allowance (DA), HRA, TA, and other Railways allowances, the total monthly salary for a Station Master can go up to ,55,000 per month in metropolitan cities. Railway jobs also include free medical, railway passes, and subsidized housing.

Exam Pattern

Stage 1 CBT (100 marks, 90 mins): General Awareness, Mathematics, and General Intelligence & Reasoning. Stage 2 CBT (120 marks, 90 mins): More advanced and tests subject-specific knowledge. Typing Skill Test: For typist posts only. Computer Based Aptitude Test: For Station Masters only. Then final Document Verification and Medical Examination.

Notification release: January 2026. Online registration window: January to February 2026. Admit card release for Stage 1 CBT: March 2026 (tentative). Stage 1 CBT expected: April–May 2026. For General Awareness, read newspapers daily and focus on events related to Indian Railways, national & international current affairs, and general science facts. For Mathematics, practice Number System, Ratio & Proportion, Time & Work, Profit & Loss, and Algebra regularly.
