When millions of Indians think of a railway job, they picture the Ticket Collector (TC) or the Station Master. These roles fall under the Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) recruitment drive conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs). It is one of the largest recruitment exams in the world, often seeing over a crore (10 million) applicants.
The NTPC covers a wide range of jobs from Level 2 to Level 6. The most popular roles are Commercial Apprentice (Level 6), Station Master (Level 6), Goods Guard (Level 5), and Commercial cum Ticket Clerk (Level 3). These roles offer incredible job security, vast public interaction, and the pride of running the fourth-largest railway network in the world.
Eligibility: From 12th Pass to Graduates
RRB NTPC is divided into Undergraduate and Graduate level posts.
Educational Qualification: For posts like Junior Clerk cum Typist and Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, a 12th Standard (10+2) pass is sufficient. For higher posts like Station Master, Goods Guard, and Commercial Apprentice, a University Degree or equivalent is required. For typing posts, proficiency in English or Hindi typing on a computer is mandatory.
Age Limit: For Undergraduate posts, the age limit is 18-30 years. For Graduate posts, it is 18-33 years. Extensive age relaxations are provided for OBC, SC/ST, Ex-Servicemen, and PwBD candidates.
Salary Structure
The salary varies drastically based on the Pay Level of the post.
Level 2 & 3 (Clerks & Ticket Collectors): Basic pay ranges from ,19,900 to ,21,700. The gross monthly salary is around ,35,000 to ,40,000.
Level 5 & 6 (Goods Guard, Station Master, CA): Basic pay ranges from ,29,200 to ,35,400. Including DA, HRA, Transport Allowance, and specific allowances like the Night Duty Allowance or Running Allowance (for Goods Guards), the gross salary easily reaches ,55,000 to ,65,000 per month.
The Selection Process: The Marathon Exam
The RRB NTPC selection process is long and exhaustive.
1st Stage CBT: A screening test comprising 100 questions (General Awareness, Math, General Intelligence & Reasoning) to be solved in 90 minutes. It is common for all posts.
2nd Stage CBT: Shortlisted candidates take separate 2nd Stage CBTs depending on the Pay Level they are applying for. The difficulty level scales with the Pay Level.
Skill Tests: Depending on the post, candidates may have to pass a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) for Station Master or a Typing Skill Test for Clerical posts.
