The Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC) conducts the Level 1 (Group D) recruitment, which is arguably the largest recruitment drive in the world, often seeing over 1.2 crore applicants for 1 Lakh+ vacancies. The posts include Track Maintainer Grade-IV, Helper/Assistant in various technical departments (Electrical, Mechanical, Signal & Telecom), and Assistant Pointsman.

These roles are the physical foundation of the railway network. Track Maintainers patrol the tracks daily to prevent derailments, while Assistants help fitters and engineers in workshops and loco sheds. It involves intense physical labor, but offers absolute job security in the central government.

Eligibility and Physical Fitness

Qualification: A 10th Standard (Matriculation) pass OR an ITI certificate from NCVT/SCVT is required. The railways have recently made ITI mandatory for many technical helper posts to ensure a skilled workforce.

Age Limit: 18 to 33 years for the General category, with standard relaxations.

Physical Efficiency Test (PET): Candidates must prove their physical fitness. Male candidates must lift a 35 kg weight and run 100 meters in 2 minutes without putting it down, followed by a 1000-meter run in 4 minutes and 15 seconds. Female candidates have lower weight and higher time limits.

Salary Structure

The posts fall under Pay Level 1 of the 7th CPC (Basic Pay ,18,000). Including DA, HRA, Transport Allowance, and specific allowances like the Track Maintainer Risk & Hardship Allowance (,2,700), the starting gross salary is around ,25,000 to ,30,000 per month.
